MZTV 1734: Friends of the Cross Don't Obsessively Repent

In Philippians, Paul speaks of enemies of the cross. "Many are walking," he says, "who are enemies of the cross." The shocking words here are "many" and "walking."

Enemies of the cross are not worldly people. Worldly people are ambivalent about the cross. Only those operating in the realm of the cross can be enemies of the cross; this is the import of "many are WALKING." The other shock is that it's "many" rather than "a few."

Paul is talking about modern-day Christians who, every single moment of their religious lives, deny what the cross of Christ accomplished in at least seven different ways: 1) they fight sin, 2) they deny that a new humanity has come, 3) they still operate in the realm of law, 4) they water baptize, 5) they deny the universal efficacy of the cross, 6) they know Jesus only according to flesh, 7) they know themselves only according to flesh.
