North Port -- like Venice -- has its own police department. This is a critical distinction, especially compared to communities like Osprey that rely on the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office. With local authority comes local responsibility: the responsibility to establish and follow clear protocols for handling family abduction cases. When those protocols are unclear, inadequate, or nonexistent, it puts children, families, and the public at risk.
