The Basic Principle:

Imagine a race where different runners (the components of your mixture) move at different speeds through a track (the stationary phase) while being carried by a crowd (the mobile phase). Some runners might have better grip on the track or be pushed by the crowd more effectively, causing them to move faster and separate from the others.
