The image of a good Shepherd would have much more meaning to the people of that day than today, however the image is still easily understandable to people today as well.Yeshua also makes HIS 2 more of HIS “I AM” there are 7 of those I AM statements (at least 7 most count 7) in JOHN’s Gospel.
In this Ch Yeshua points out that sheep only listen to the voice of their shepherd. They won’t listen to a stranger.Spiritually, this explains why men like the scribes and Pharisees don’t accept Yeshua: They are not part of HIS flock. Yeshua noted that these men are ultimately subjects of the Devil. They don’t listen to the voice of GOD because they are part of some other flock.
Yeshua refers to HIMself as the “good shepherd.” This contrasts to the false religious leaders of Israel. Yeshua is the ultimate good shepherd; HE is willing to lay down HIS own life for the flock.Unlike those false leaders, who are false for various reasons, Yeshua is willing to sacrifice HIMself to save those HE protects.
After this, Yeshua will return to Jerusalem in the triumphal entry to deliver HIS last public statements before HIS arrest and crucifixion, as seen in CH 12. So, things are moving quickly.
Because the Gospel of John was written when people largely grew their own crops to a large degree.in many cases, they also raised their own livestock, this illustration was familiar and very recognizable, except to the pharisees and Jewish officials who were either so out of touch, which hard to believe or just simply close minded.
There is no deception with a true shepherd. Yeshua is the ONLY gate and there will be, there were, are robbers and thieves who will teach there are others who say they are the way.
The reason the flock would not follow the thief willingly was simple: They were accustomed to the voice of their own shepherd and would not follow a stranger. As Yeshua continues HIS discourse… with these Jewish leaders HE states HIS Mission in clear terms that everyone of them would have clearly understood by ALL.
Yeshua was in the Temple area known as Solomons Porch. It was on the eastern side of the Temple area near where the sheep gate was located. In this very important section, Yeshua will use the image of Israel as GOD’s sheep.
Sheep are not the smartest of GOD’s creatures. And one thing they tend to do is wander. If one is wandering the others will follow. The Prophet Isiah knew that, he wrote: ISA 53:6, We all, like sheep, have gone astray… But there is another thing about sheep and it quite amazing: The sheep know the voice of their shepherd.
