On May 2, 2025, New Orleans Police Department (NOPD) Officer Raychel Willey was seriously injured while responding to a suspected overdose in the parking lot of a Walmart on Tchoupitoulas Street. Officer Willey administered Narcan to the individual, later identified as 42-year-old Gregory Williams. Upon regaining consciousness, Williams acted erratically and attempted to flee the scene in his vehicle, dragging Officer Willey, whose clothing became caught in the car door.

During the incident, Williams struck a female bystander, causing her serious leg injuries. Officer Willey was eventually dislodged from the vehicle and found beneath a truck. Williams continued driving and collided with additional vehicles before being fatally shot by police officers at an intersection.
