Woman arrested for allegedly depositing $50,000 counterfeit check, punching officer in face

Facts:
On January 10, 2024, a local bank reported a counterfeit check over $50,000 deposited, leading to the identification of Colbianta F. Spain, 23, from Sulphur, as a suspect.

On January 18, 2024, a Calcasieu Parish Sheriff’s Office detective located Spain at a bank branch on McNeese Street in Lake Charles and attempted to take her statement.

When the detective tried to arrest Spain, she resisted and punched the detective in the face, according to Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Kayla Vincent.

Spain was arrested and booked into the Calcasieu Correctional Center, facing charges of resisting arrest with force and attempted bank fraud.

Spain pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit bank fraud, with sentencing initially set for March 20, 2025, according to a Department of Justice press release.
