Chapter 4: Bill’s Town:
Joel and Ellie make their way to the outskirts of Lincoln, Massachusetts, in search of an old contact, Bill, a paranoid and reclusive survivalist who owes Joel a favor. Their journey into the overgrown, trap-ridden town is tense and dangerous. As they move through abandoned streets and buildings, Ellie gets a crash course in how brutal and unpredictable life outside the QZ really is. The town is littered with Bill’s improvised defenses—tripwires, nail bombs, and infected corpses used as early warning systems. After navigating these hazards, Joel and Ellie finally reconnect with Bill, who grudgingly agrees to help them get a working car.

Their alliance is uneasy. Bill constantly insults Ellie and warns Joel that getting attached will only get him killed. The trio scavenges for a car battery, which leads them to a high school swarming with infected. Their mission ends in chaos when they’re ambushed by a Bloater—the largest and most dangerous form of infected Joel and Ellie have seen yet. After a harrowing battle, they narrowly escape to a nearby safehouse and install the battery into a truck. As they prepare to leave, they stumble upon the body of Frank—Bill’s former partner—who took his own life rather than endure another day with Bill or the apocalypse. The moment is somber, heavy with regret. Bill insists on staying behind, leaving Joel and Ellie to continue westward in the newly acquired truck.

Chapter 5: Pittsburgh (Part 1):
Joel and Ellie’s road trip is violently cut short when a pileup forces them to detour through Pittsburgh. Almost immediately, they’re ambushed by hunters—ruthless survivors who prey on travelers for supplies. Joel and Ellie barely survive the trap and are forced to abandon the truck, fleeing deeper into hostile territory on foot. The city is in ruins and crawling with hunters, who communicate through radios and work in coordinated packs. Ellie proves her value in a life-or-death moment by saving Joel with a gun for the first time, marking a turning point in their relationship. She begins to shed her innocence, and Joel begins to trust her more.

Together, they navigate through a derelict hotel filled with both deadly traps and scavengers. Their progress is slow and filled with tension as the two quietly eliminate enemies and push forward through the crumbling interior. The chapter reaches a dramatic peak in the hotel courtyard, where they’re pinned down in a brutal firefight against a group of heavily armed hunters. It’s a chaotic, high-stakes encounter that forces Joel and Ellie to rely on each other more than ever before. Bloodied and shaken, they survive the encounter and press onward, deeper into a city that offers no safe harbor.
