THE WOLFWALKERS: WEREWOLVES OF OSSARY

In a dense, isolated inhospitable land in Ireland known as Ossory, huge deadly wolves were said to roam and stalk the woods at night. The land had a dangerous reputation, and no one lived in Ossory until a clan of barbaric warriors came from faraway lands and were said to have made a pact with the wolves. They had the ability to shapeshift into wolves and were known to attack at night with brutal force, mutilating bodies, kidnapping children, and burning lands in massacres. They were seen dancing and howling in the moonlight, after attacking cattle and livestock and eating their raw flesh. They wore the skins of wolves, smeared blood on their bodies, and ran on all fours.

The most famous legend cites the warrior Laignech Fáelad, considered the original werewolf from whom the others descended. One story recounts a priest's encounter with a werewolf, who asks for his help in breaking the curse upon his clan. It is said that St. Patrick managed to convert part of the clan, freeing them from lycanthropy, while other werewolves continued fighting against English invaders.
