Ten inmates, a hole in the wall, a trail of taunting graffiti, and a city on edge. This is the shocking story of the New Orleans jail escape that has left authorities scrambling and the public stunned.
On May 16, 2025, at the Orleans Justice Center in New Orleans, Louisiana, chaos broke loose—quietly at first. It began with something as unassuming as a toilet. Behind it, inmates discovered or perhaps already knew about a hidden vulnerability in the structure—a hole that led to a maintenance area. From there, they moved through a hallway and onto a loading dock. Their final hurdle: the jail’s perimeter wall, topped with barbed wire. But even that wasn’t enough to stop them. Using makeshift ropes fashioned from blankets, they scaled the wall and vanished into the night.
The most disturbing part? Jail officials didn’t even know they were gone until over eight hours later, during a routine headcount at 8:30 a.m. The surveillance footage later reviewed by authorities didn’t just show the inmates escaping. It revealed graffiti messages left behind on the walls. "Too Easy LOL" and "Catch us when you can," the escapees had scrawled, taunting law enforcement and highlighting what can only be described as a massive failure in jail security.
Out of the ten who escaped, three have since been recaptured. Kendell Myles, one of the escapees, was found hiding under a car in New Orleans' French Quarter. Alongside him, Robert Moody and Dkenan Dennis were also apprehended. But seven remain on the run, and the urgency to bring them back into custody is growing. Some of these fugitives are facing serious charges, including murder, kidnapping, and rape. With each passing hour, the threat they pose outside the jail grows more serious.
Investigators now believe this wasn’t just a spontaneous breakout. The nature of the escape, especially access to the plumbing panel, has raised suspicions that the inmates may have had help from someone inside. The panel they used to access the maintenance area could only be removed externally—meaning this might be more than just an inside job, it could be a symptom of deep-rooted vulnerabilities in the jail’s operations.
It’s also important to note the human factor. At the time of the escape, the jail was severely understaffed—operating at just 60% of its required personnel. The only guard assigned to the pod where the escapees were housed? He was on a meal break. No one was watching when the inmates vanished.
In response, the jail administration has taken swift action. Several staff members have already been suspended as investigations continue. Both internal reviews and external probes by state and federal agencies are now underway. The FBI and U.S. Marshals are working with local law enforcement in the manhunt for the seven remaining escapees.
This breakout has sparked outrage and concern across Louisiana and beyond. Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill did not mince words, calling the security lapse inexcusable. Public trust in the Orleans Justice Center has been deeply shaken, and the questions are mounting. How could something like this happen in 2025? How could it take hours to realize ten inmates were gone? And what changes must be made to ensure this never happens again?
For now, the city watches and waits. The escaped inmates are still out there, and the hunt is far from over. Authorities are urging residents to remain vigilant and report any sightings or information. This story is still unfolding—and the consequences could be felt for years to come.
