The event Malcolm X was waiting for finally happened in Los Angeles when 8 unarmed Nation of Islam members were shot by the LAPD, killing Mosque #27 secretary Ronald Stokes in the process. None of the eight were resisting arrest. It was a clear act of police brutality with obvious victims. If this wasn't a call to action for the Nation of Islam, what was?

The subsequent (and manipulated) dispute between Malcolm X and Elijah Muhammad over how to react drove a wedge between them, resulting in more disagreements and more distance between the two. Ultimately, when the veil was pulled back, both men learned things about the other that, for the first time, caused frustration and disillusionment. It was the beginning of the end for Malcolm X and the Nation of Islam. As it turned out, it was the beginning of his salvation.
