Interstellar tugboats for space travel. Sunbird is a fusion-powered spacecraft concept developed by UK-based tech company Pulsar Fusion. It’s designed to move cargo and satellites on long-distance missions far beyond Earth orbit. Sunbird is expected to use a Direct Fusion Drive which could reach speeds over 220,000 meters per second. That means trips to Mars could drop from 7 months down to just 4. The system may generate up to 2 megawatts of power to support the craft’s propulsion and onboard tech. Unlike traditional rockets, fusion engines produce no carbon emissions and use far less fuel. Pulsar Fusion says Sunbird could be demo-ready for a space mission as soon as 2027.
