Biblical Inspiration

Good morning, today we are going to talk about inspiration.

[2Ti 3:16-17 KJV] 16 All scripture [is] given by inspiration of God, and [is] profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: 17 That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.

Let’s pray....

The Bible is for our edification by God. He wrote it through the men that transcribed it. This doesn’t mean that he turned them into drooling robots and inhabited their bodies and wrote it with their hands. What it means is that he gave them the words to write and they wrote it. God dictated to them and then they wrote what they were told.

There are different theories of inspiration.....

There is Natural theory – Bible is written by smart men and NOT by God.

See now this wouldn’t really be God’s word then would it. Let’s look at 2 Peter 1:20-21

[2Pe 1:20-21 KJV] 20 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation. 21 For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake [as they were] moved by the Holy Ghost.

There is also Dynamic Concept theory and this is that only the main thought of the section or paragraph is from God and not all of the words in the Bible.

In Matthew 5:18 it addresses that.....

[Mat 5:18 KJV] 18 For verily I say unto you, Till heaven and earth pass, one jot or one tittle shall in no wise pass from the law, till all be fulfilled.

See there isn’t one jot or title that isn’t of the word of God. It is all from God’s breath.

Now there is Partial inspiration – Only certain parts of the Bible are inspired... guess what, we are going to debunk this one too...

[2Ti 3:16 KJV] 16 All scripture [is] given by inspiration of God, and [is] profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

Spiritual Rule only is another theory and it means that the Bible is an infallible source for ethics and religion, but not history or “science”. So in other words, if you want the bible for religious purposes, then it is perfect, but if you want it for “real stuff” then you’re out of luck.

[Jhn 17:17 KJV] 17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.

[Jhn 3:12 KJV] 12 If I have told you earthly things, and ye believe not, how shall ye believe, if I tell you [of] heavenly things?

Existential view – Only inspired parts are what speaks to you.....

Again, we can use john 17:17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth. and even 2 Peter 1:20 Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.

Now here is the final theory and it is the correct one....

Plenary verbal means that ALL of the words are inspired by God.

[Mat 24:35 KJV] 35 Heaven and earth shall pass away, but my words shall not pass away.

[1Co 14:37 KJV] 37 If any man think himself to be a prophet, or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things that I write unto you are the commandments of the Lord.

Now let’s dive a little deeper into the Inspiration aspect of the Bible.

Now we know that All of the scripture is inspired by God, but how was it inspired?

Get with me in Psalm 33:6

[Psa 33:6 KJV] 6 By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth.

[Act 1:16 KJV] 16 Men [and] brethren, this scripture must needs have been fulfilled, which the Holy Ghost by the mouth of David spake before concerning Judas, which was guide to them that took Jesus.

[Heb 3:7 KJV] 7 Wherefore (as the Holy Ghost saith, To day if ye will hear his voice,

[1Co 2:12-13 KJV] 12 Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God. 13 Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.

[Act 28:25 KJV] 25 And when they agreed not among themselves, they departed, after that Paul had spoken one word, Well spake the Holy Ghost by Esaias the prophet unto our fathers,

Now, we know that the Bible or the Word of God is inspired by God into man who then wrote what it was that God told them to write, but what is the Word of God? Well in order to find that out, we need to head to Revelation..... the book of which many people do not speak...

Revelation 19:11-13,15-16

[Rev 19:11-13, 15-16 KJV] 11 And I saw heaven opened, and behold a white horse; and he that sat upon him [was] called Faithful and True, and in righteousness he doth judge and make war. 12 His eyes [were] as a flame of fire, and on his head [were] many crowns; and he had a name written, that no man knew, but he himself. 13 And he [was] clothed with a vesture dipped in blood: and his name is called The Word of God. ... 15 And out of his mouth goeth a sharp sword, that with it he should smite the nations: and he shall rule them with a rod of iron: and he treadeth the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. 16 And he hath on [his] vesture and on his thigh a name written, KING OF KINGS, AND LORD OF LORDS.

This isn’t saying that the book that you have in front of you is God, but the Word of God, the words that God breathed into the men who transcribed the Bible.

See, this is the Bible literally saying that the Word of God is the King of Kings and Lord of Lords and is also the Almighty God. Remember an attack on the word or a blaspheme of the word, is also an attack on God himself.

So let’s recap everything that we went over today....

There are 6 inspirational theories.....

Natural theory

Dynamic theory

Partial inspiration

Spiritual rule only

Existential view

Plenary verbal

The word of God is inspired into man who then wrote what was dictated to them. God didn’t inspire the men, he inspired the words that were written down.

Remember [2Ti 3:16 KJV] 16 All scripture [is] given by inspiration of God, and [is] profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

Then we covered that the Word was breathed out of God into these men...

[Psa 33:6 KJV] 6 By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth.

And finally we learned that the Word of God is God.

Don’t forget,

An attack on the Word of God is an attack on God himself.
