Multiple flocks would be kept in a single pen. To get his flock out, all that shepherd had to do was call. HIS sheep would respond, sheep from other flocks would not respond.Yeshua uses this common analogy in response to the religious leaders of Jerusalem. These men don't listen to HIS voice because they are not HIS flock.
The worst thing that a gatekeeper could do was to let a shepherd’s sheep out at night where the sheep could easily be stolen.For their shepherd to gather them into the fold again would be very time consuming and difficult.
LUK 15:5-7, And when HE finds it, he joyfully puts it on his shoulders and goes home. Then he calls his friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost sheep.’ I tell you that in the same way there will be more rejoicing in Heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine righteous persons who do not need to repent.
LUK 15:8-10, “Or suppose a woman has ten silver coins (10 days wages) and loses one. Doesn’t she light a lamp, sweep the house and search carefully until she finds it? And when she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbors together and says, ‘Rejoice with me; I have found my lost coin. In the same way, I tell you, there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of GOD over one sinner who repents.
You are lost, I AM here to bring you into the truth! Just like the TORAH spoke of and the Prophets prophesied about. I AM the true good shepherd, beware of the false shepherds, the false gatekeepers.
The reason the flock would not follow the thief willingly was simple: They were accustomed to the voice of their own shepherd and would not follow a stranger.
Yeshua was in the Temple area known as Solomons Porch. It was on the eastern side of the Temple area near where the sheep gate was located.
Yeshua uses the image of the shepherd that surely should have resonated with the Jewish leaders, well it did but not in the right way.Yeshua casts HIMself as the Good Shepherd of Israel. That was a prophecy described in EZE 34.
Ezekiel wrote his prophecy from Babylon about 600 years before Yeshua. The Prophet Ezekiel paints a picture of GOD’s love and commitment to HIS people.
3 You eat the fat, clothe yourselves with the wool and slaughter the choice animals, but you do not take care of the flock. 4 You have not strengthened the weak or healed the sick or bound up the injured. You have not brought back the strays or searched for the lost. You have ruled them harshly and brutally.
Through Ezekiel, GOD condemns the leaders of Israel (symbolically referred to as shepherds) for exploiting and neglecting the people. The shepherds feed themselves but do not care for the flock, causing the sheep to scatter and become prey.
EZE 34:10 This is what the Sovereign LORD says: I AM against the (false and evil) shepherds and will hold them accountable for MY flock. I will remove them from tending the flock so that the shepherds can no longer feed themselves. I will rescue MY flock from their mouths, and it will no longer be food for them.
EZE 34:13-16 I will bring them out from the nations and gather them from the countries, and I will bring them into their own land. I will pasture them on the mountains of Israel, in the ravines and in all the settlements in the land. I MYself will tend MY sheep and have them lie down, declares the Sovereign LORD. I will search for the lost and bring back the strays. I will bind up the injured and strengthen the weak, but the sleek and the strong I will destroy. I will shepherd the flock with justice.
GOD promises to place One Shepherd over HIS people, a descendant of David Who will tend them, symbolizing the Messiah Yeshua. And HE was there now in front of these Jewish leaders who should have recognized the prophecy in Ezekiel.
