* Scripture:

James 1:13-15 - "Let no one say when he is tempted, 'I am being tempted by God,' for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death."

* Reflection:

This passage highlights that temptation originates from our own desires, not from God. It follows a progression: desire, enticement, yielding, sin, and ultimately, spiritual death. Understanding this process is the first step in resisting.

* Historical Example:

Joseph in Potiphar's House (Genesis 39): Joseph, a young man in a foreign land, was tempted daily by his master's wife. Her persistent advances appealed to his natural desires for acceptance and pleasure. However, Joseph recognized the moral and spiritual implications. He understood that yielding to this temptation would be a betrayal of his master's trust and a sin against God.

* Joseph's Resistance:

Joseph repeatedly refused her advances, stating, "How then can I do this great wickedness and sin against God?" (Genesis 39:9). He eventually fled from her presence to avoid the temptation altogether.

* Application:
What are some of the desires that you find yourself most often battling? How can understanding the progression of temptation help you to identify and resist it earlier?
