Anglo-Saxon Invasion and Settlement of England - 410 AD to 1066 AD

On Traveling Through History, we do a detailed review of the period prior to 1066, when the Angles, Saxon, Jutes and Frisians were coming over in wave after wave post 410 AD to conquer and settle England after the power vacuum left by the Romans pulling out of the country.  We take a close look at the major leaders and kings who shaped this period of England's history and formation.  We even take a look at two of the kings that my family is related to!

During the fifth century A.D. Britain ceased to be part of the Roman Empire and became a group of small warring territories, from which eventually developed the medieval kingdoms of England, Scotland and Wales.  This process involved population movements around the Irish and North Sea coastal regions, of which the largest was that of the Anglo-Saxons from northern Germany and southern Scandinavia into eastern England.  Small kingdoms sprung up all over the island, and the new settlers pushed the Britons who were already there west to the coasts, to Ireland or in some cases they got on ships and left for regions of France for protection.

We take a look at a video that does a good job showing how England's map was shaped over the centuries as more and more Anglo-Saxon invaders as well as Viking invaders continued to come to this fertile and largely unprotected land.
