Uzodinma distances IPOB from Gulak’s killing, says it has political undertone
Governor Hope Uzodinma of Imo State says the killing of Ahmed Gulak, a former presidential aide, has political undertone.
Addressing a press conference in Owerri, the state capital, on Monday, Uzodinma countered police claim that he was killed by members of the outlawed Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB). Alhaji Ahmed Gulak was in Imo State for a national assignment. He came to Owerri with the Senate Committee on Constitutional Amendment. Being a humble man, he chose to travel incognito according to his friend who was with him. Someone must have trailed him from the hotel to the airport. That is exactly why his gruesome murder appears to be a clear case of political assassination,” he said.
“The brutal and callous assassination of Alhaji Ahmed Gulak yesterday, Sunday, May 30th, 2021 on his way to the Sam Mbakwe Cargo Airport, is painful because he did not deserve to die that way.”
“The death of this compatriot is a personal loss to me because he was an invaluable friend and brother whose sense of justice, fairness and uprightness endeared him to me. I was shocked to my marrows when the sad news of his callous murder was broken to me.
“I was getting ready to go to church when the sad news came and I could not attend the service again. It was simply one of the most devastating news I have heard in my life and I am yet to recover from the shock. It remains a puzzle to me why anyone would want to murder him in this gruesome and vicious manner.”

The All Progressives Congress, APC, has berated Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma over his comments that Ahmed Ali Gulak’s murder was politically motivated.
Chairman of the Adamawa State Chapter of the party, Ibrahim Bilal, gave the reaction to journalists on Wednesday, in Yola the state capital.
Bilal also called on President Muhammadu Buhari to use the full might of the federal government to secure justice for Gulak, a former political adviser to Ex-President Goodluck Jonathan and chieftain of the APC, killed in Imo State.
Bilal tasked the Buhari-led government to go after the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) agitators and crush the group, using the full might of the government.
The APC chairman also expressed regret that while Igbo were freely going about their businesses peacefully in Adamawa, Northerners in the Southeast could not enjoy the same right.
He said, “We need justice over the killing of Barrister Ahmed Aliyu Gulak. Also, we want the Federal Government and the Imo State Government to investigate Gulak’s death and bring the perpetrators of this gruesome killing to justice.
“But most importantly, we want leaders of the Southeast to call their people to order, because we believe not all of them support the activities of IPOB, which we believe is behind the killing of our innocent son in their region.
“We believe Gulak’s murder was premeditated and executed, by those who had repeatedly targeted Northerners in their region.
“We disagree with Governor Hope Uzodinma for inputting political motives for Gulak’s death, judging from the crime scene video.
“Since he has imputed political motives to it (Gulak’s death), he should produce the perpetrators as the chief security officer of the state,” Bilal said.

IPOB denies involvement in Gulak’s death.
The Indigenous People of Biafra has denied any involvement in the murder of a former presidential aide and a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, Ahmed Gulak.
In a statement issued on Tuesday by IPOB’s Media and Publicity Secretary, Comrade Emma Powerful, the group rejected claims linking the Biafra group to Gulak’s death.
Reacting to the claims, Powerful said Gulak was murdered on Sunday, May 30, 2021, while the sit-at-home observance declared for the annual May 30th Remembrance Day in 2021 was held on Monday, May 31.
While dismissing the claims as false and misleading, the IPOB spokesperson said the APC chieftain was killed in Owerri, the Imo State capital, a full day before the IPOB observance.
“This timeline alone proves that IPOB had no involvement in his death. Linking the tragic event to IPOB is baseless,” the statement read.
IPOB also addressed the recent introduction of Gulak’s death certificate during the ongoing trial of its leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. According to the group, the certificate has “no relevance to the context of the trial.”
The group further criticised what it described as “media misrepresentation,” urging media outlets to adhere to the principles of “truth, accuracy, and objectivity.” IPOB called for transparency in reporting and demanded that “the full transcript of court proceedings be reviewed before spreading unverified claims.”
We call on all responsible media outlets to prioritise factual reporting and avoid spreading narratives that could mislead the public,” the statement concluded.
IPOB also reiterated its demand for the “immediate and unconditional release” of its leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, who it claims is “unlawfully detained in violation of local and international law.”
This comes hours after the Federal High Court in Abuja admitted Gulak’s medical report and death certificate as evidence in the ongoing trial of the detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, who is facing terrorism-related charges.
Justice James Omotoso, who presided over the proceedings, allowed the documents tendered by the prosecution through a witness identified simply as BBB, following no objection from the defence team led by Kanu Agabi (SAN), alongside Chukwuma-Machukwu Ume (SAN) and Aloy Ejimakor.
The prosecution, led by Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), presented the documents, which included a police report from Owerri, Imo State, linking Gulak’s death to gunmen suspected to be members of IPOB.
