Melania Joins Trump to Sign Landmark Take It Down Act Targeting Deepfakes and Revenge Porn
Washington, May 19, 2025 — First Lady Melania Trump stood alongside President Donald Trump in the White House Rose Garden as he signed into law the Take It Down Act, a sweeping federal measure that criminalizes the non-consensual sharing of explicit images, including AI-generated deepfakes.
The law, passed with overwhelming bipartisan support, creates a national standard aimed at protecting Americans from online privacy violations, extortion, and exploitation.
“Anyone who intentionally distributes explicit images without the subject’s consent will face up to three years in prison,” President Trump said at the signing ceremony.
Melania Trump, who first advocated for the bill’s passage in March, participated in the ceremonial signing—an unusual public appearance underscoring her role in championing the legislation. “She deserves to sign it,” the president said with a smile, handing her the pen.
The law passed the Senate unanimously in February and the House in a 409-2 vote in April. It requires platforms to remove reported content within 48 hours or face civil penalties.
The bill also introduces clear federal guidelines for tech companies—many of which, including Meta, Google, and TikTok, have expressed support. Public figures such as Paris Hilton have endorsed the law as well.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt called the legislation “a historic and bipartisan new law focused on protecting children and families from online extortion and exploitation through the non-consensual distribution of intimate images and deepfake abuse.”
Before this act, most protections existed only at the state level, creating inconsistencies in enforcement and gaps in coverage—especially regarding synthetic media. The Take It Down Act establishes a uniform legal framework and tasks the Federal Trade Commission with enforcement, giving companies one year to comply.
While many have praised the law as a major step forward, some civil liberties advocates caution that its broad language could unintentionally impact legal content, such as adult entertainment or political commentary.
Nonetheless, the law marks a new chapter in federal regulation of online content, privacy, and artificial intelligence—one that could reshape how platforms handle sensitive material in the digital age.
