Silver Linings - Stay
“To Be (Seen)”
Featuring Pat, Tiffany, Nelly, and Joe
[Scene: Joe’s apartment – a quiet Saturday afternoon. A guitar leans against the wall. A notebook sits open on the coffee table. Nelly stands near the window, looking out over a gray, drizzly city. She’s holding her phone, watching something on mute. Joe sits silently on the couch, hunched forward, restless.]
Nelly:
You used to light up every room. Even the ones that didn’t want to see you. You made them see you.
Joe: (avoiding her gaze)
I didn’t want them to see me anymore. Not really. I just wanted to disappear after the last curtain call.
Nelly:
Yeah, well… you did.
(beat)
But it still breaks my heart, Joe. Every single time I remember what you could do with just your voice.
Joe:
My voice didn’t pay the rent, Nelly. The applause doesn’t make the silence at home any quieter.
Nelly:
It’s not about rent. It’s about truth. About why you were put here.
[Cut to: Pat and Tiffany in a diner booth, sharing fries. Tiffany sips coffee and flips through TikTok on her phone. Pat watches silently.]
Tiffany:
You know what I think? You’re more afraid of being great than failing. You get up, you train, you read, you obsess—
But then you ghost the show.
Pat: (quietly)
It’s easier to control the fantasy than the audience.
Tiffany: (softly)
But I’m not an audience. I’m right here. So is she. So is Joe. You guys keep writing yourselves out of the scene before it even starts.
[Scene shift: Joe alone in his apartment. Rain outside. He looks in the mirror. Then grabs his phone, takes a breath, and hits “record.” He’s standing in front of a bare wall, face steady.]
Joe (softly):
“To be, or not to be… that is the question:
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The slings and arrows of outrageous fortune,
Or to take arms against a sea of troubles
And by opposing end them…”
(His voice deepens with passion as the speech continues. His eyes burn—not with fear, but focus. He finishes the monologue with a half-smile. Then, he uploads it. Caption: “For Nelly. For everyone afraid to speak.”)
[Cut to Nelly watching the video. Her hand flies to her mouth. She tears up. She presses replay.]
[Final Scene: Joe walks into a tiny local theater a week later. Pat is seated in the front row. Tiffany’s backstage adjusting lights. Nelly is already center stage.]
Joe: (to Nelly)
I don’t want to be famous. But I want to be heard. And maybe… that’s enough.
Nelly: (grinning)
That’s more than enough. Welcome back, Hamlet.
[Voiceover: Pat’s voice as we see the group rehearsing, laughing, pushing each other forward.]
Pat (V.O.):
There’s a moment when the shy one speaks. When the quiet one steps forward. And suddenly… the whole room breathes differently.
That’s what Joe did. He didn’t just perform Shakespeare.
He reminded us:
To be… is to be brave.
