Marathon takes place in the year 2893 on Tau Ceti IV, a planet where a human colony, established from the UESC Marathon (a colony ship made from the Martian moon Deimos), mysteriously disappeared. The vast majority of the 30,000 colonists vanished without a trace, leaving behind a lost and dangerous world.

You play as a "Runner," a cybernetic mercenary who has given up their human body for a specialized synthetic shell. Rival factions have hired Runners to infiltrate the abandoned colony, battle both other Runners and environmental threats (including AI-controlled enemies and hazards), and extract valuable artifacts, data, and resources.

Each match revolves around deploying into a shared environment (such as the woody "Perimeter" or the more open "Dire Marsh"), searching for loot, and attempting to successfully extract before being eliminated by enemy players or environmental threats. The core of the game is a high-stakes risk-reward system: any items collected during a run are permanently lost if you fail to extract, while successfully extracted items can be used in future matches to improve your Runner.

Players choose from a roster of Runners, each with unique abilities. While a total of six are expected at launch, currently revealed Runners include Locus (a defensive/tank specialist), Blackbird (a scouting and recon expert), Glitch (an agile disruptor), and Void (a stealth specialist). These abilities complement Bungie's signature crisp gunplay and fluid movement.

Unlike the original games' single-player campaign, the new Marathon incorporates an evolving narrative that unfolds through in-game seasons, events, and player actions. As you complete contracts for different factions, you'll uncover more about their motivations and the mysteries of Tau Ceti IV, including what happened to the missing colonists. The developers aim for the game to be a "story engine" that generates unique player experiences and memorable "survival stories," even in defeat.
