On May 16, 2025, at approximately 1:34 p.m., the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) responded to reports of shots fired inside the Las Vegas Athletic Club at 1725 N. Rainbow Boulevard. A gunman, identified as 34-year-old Daniel Ortega, a gym member, entered the facility with a rifle and opened fire, killing one employee, McKenzie Scott, and injuring at least three others. The shooting caused panic, with gym members fleeing for safety.

LVMPD officers arrived quickly and confronted Ortega, who was still armed. During the encounter, Ortega’s rifle reportedly jammed, preventing a potential mass-casualty event. Officers Kaid Urban (29, with LVMPD since 2020), Skeeter Black (44, since 2015), and Aaron Javier (37) fired their weapons, neutralizing Ortega, who was later pronounced dead at a hospital. Bodycam footage and video evidence captured the confrontation, showing officers responding to the active threat.

The LVMPD stated that Ortega would have faced charges of murder and multiple counts of assault if he had survived. Investigators are still examining the motive, but no clear reason for the attack has been disclosed.
