AI-Generated Deepfakes in 2025: The Good, The Bad, The Ugly

Senator Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) led the Senate Judiciary Privacy Committee’s hearing on AI-Generated deepfakes. “This hearing is titled “The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly,” and there’s a reason for that. There is so much good that AI has brought—especially in Tennessee—whether it be in manufacturing, healthcare, or cutting-edge research. We’ve even seen the amazing role that AI has played in giving Randy Travis the ability to share his talent with the world once more. Despite some of these benefits, there are “bad” and even “ugly” sides to AI and—specifically, AI-generated deepfakes. These deepfakes cause tremendous harm, and today we will examine those harms and the legislative solutions—including the NO FAKES Act that Senators Coons, Klobuchar, Tillis, and I introduced—to address these concerns.”
