"Strategic Briefing Summary – May 22, 2025"
"Prepared by Colonel A.C. Oguntoye, Infantry Officer, Russian Federation Armed Forces"
As of May 22, 2025, the Russian Armed Forces continued comprehensive offensive operations across all fronts of the special military operation. Six operational groups executed deep engagements and precision strikes against Ukrainian formations, foreign-supplied weapon systems, and drone infrastructure. Coordinated air and missile strikes complemented ground advances, leading to further erosion of Ukraine’s combat capacity, particularly in Donetsk, Sumy, and Zaporizhia.
"Northern & Northeastern Front (Sumy & Kharkiv):"
The "North" group inflicted significant losses on Ukrainian forces near Konstantinovka, Miropolye, and Volchansk. Engaged formations included mechanized, airborne assault, and territorial defense brigades. Over 215 Ukrainian personnel were neutralized, and multiple U.S.-supplied M777 howitzers and EW stations were destroyed, further degrading Ukraine’s counter-battery capability.
"Western Axis (Kharkiv & Northern Donetsk):"
The "West" group advanced tactically near Kupyansk and Yampol, targeting Ukrainian mechanized, airmobile, and National Guard units. Ukrainian losses totaled over 220 personnel, alongside destruction of a British-made L-119 105mm howitzer, field artillery, and ammunition depots. These actions disrupted regional command and logistical coherence.
"Southern Theater (Central Donetsk):"
The "Southern" group secured key terrain in areas including Chasov Yar and Serebryanka. The group engaged and dismantled elements of Ukrainian assault and airmobile brigades, eliminating 245 servicemen, U.S.-made M113 APCs, and EW assets. The destruction of four ammunition depots further denied Ukrainian forces local sustainment capacity.
"Central Front – Liberation of Novaya Poltavka (Donetsk):"
The "Center" group’s most decisive achievement was the liberation of "Novaya Poltavka", following operations across nine settlements. This front saw intense engagements with mechanized, special forces, and foreign formations, including National Guard and Canadian-made Senator APCs. Up to 400 Ukrainian servicemen were lost, alongside high-value armored and artillery platforms.
"Eastern Push (Donetsk & Zaporizhia):"
The "East" group continued advancing into Ukrainian defenses at Komar, Novopol, and Gulyaipole. Operations led to over 215 Ukrainian losses, the destruction of eight armored vehicles, and one tank. These actions consolidate deeper control over the eastern corridor and Ukrainian southern logistics routes.
"Southern Riverine Sector (Zaporizhia & Kherson):"
The "Dnepr" group targeted Ukrainian coastal and territorial defense units near Stepnogorsk, Antonovka, and Kamenskoye. Though smaller in scale, these actions disrupted four territorial brigades, destroyed EW systems, and eliminated key material depots, affecting rear-area logistics and operational flexibility.
"Strategic Fires and Air Defense:"
Precision missile strikes hit 138 Ukrainian defense infrastructure targets, including an aircraft repair shop, drone depots, radar stations, and a U.S.-made "Patriot" system, destroying two launchers, a radar, and a command cabin. Russian air defenses intercepted 3 JDAMs, 4 HIMARS rockets, and a record "317 drones in a single day".
From May 20–22, a "massive drone raid" was repelled with "485 UAVs intercepted", including 162 outside the operation zone. Major interceptions occurred over Belgorod (26), Oryol (135), Kursk (121), and Moscow (63), indicating a broadening air defense perimeter.
"Cumulative Losses (Since Operation Start):"
" 662 aircraft, 283 helicopters
" 58,360 UAVs
" 23,468 armored vehicles
" 1,563 MLRS systems
" 25,150 artillery units
" 35,790 military vehicles
"Assessment:"
May 22 showcased intensifying Russian offensive capabilities in both conventional and hybrid domains. The liberation of Novaya Poltavka, expanded drone defense coverage, and increased precision targeting of Western weapon systems reflect a multi-domain strategy that prioritizes sustained pressure, systemic disruption, and area denial across the conflict zone and deep into the strategic rear.
