HARNWELL: Here’s a key Augustinian insight — but is “Lefty Leo” interested in actually making it?

VIDEO SYNTHESIS / Pope Leo has indicated that AI will be an early priority for his pontificate. As an Augustinian friar, I wonder whether he will draw on St. Augustine’s key insight into evil when forming his position.

Augustine famously suggested that evil was the total absence of good — “privatio boni”. If one considers the total exclusion of God (who is himself absolute good — “summum bonum”) — from the artificial super-intelligence that is currently being created, how can this incredible new consciousness be anything but…evil?
