Eira Culverwell – Finding Belonging Through Budo: A Journey from Kyokushin to Jiu-Jitsu

Eira Culverwell is a lifelong martial artist whose journey spans continents, disciplines, and deep personal transformation. A 4th dan black belt in Kyokushin Karate, Eira spent decades immersed in the art — pushing past limits, competing, and striving for mastery. But after years in the striking world, she felt drawn toward a new challenge: the ground game. That calling led her into Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, where she now competes actively as a brown belt.

Her transition wasn’t just about style — it was about rediscovery. For over 14 years, Eira has traveled regularly to Japan, not only to train and compete, but to connect with a culture that feels like home. Her story is one of movement, stillness, and the pursuit of purpose through martial practice.

This episode explores what it means to evolve as a martial artist, to let go of labels, and to chase the places — and people — that make us feel whole.
