Moody's recently became the final of the three main credit rating agencies to topple the US government's once-perfect creditworthiness. The group cited the rapid accumulation of national debt, rising interest payments, and subsequent failures of administrations to address the ballooning issue.

At the same time, three of the country's largest banks — JPMorgan Chase, Bank of America, and Wells Fargo —also saw their ratings slashed. Collectively, these major financial institutions had over a trillion dollars in hidden losses last year, spooking investors and raising questions of fiscal stability.

As the country's financial horizons grow dim, many private sector leaders are warning of what economic hardship is around the corner. A weakening in the creditworthiness of the government and banking sectors directly affects investors who are primarily exposed to the US dollar and dollar-linked assets.

As uncertainty around the USD hegemony grows, gold is making significant inroads into the global financial system, having recently been awarded the title of Tier 1 collateral. With its price accelerating and confidence in fiat currencies waning, more analysts believe a $5,000 an ounce gold price may be closer than expected.
