Meanwhile, the U.S. Supreme Court stepped into a dispute in the Maine legislature. Republican assemblywoman Laurel Liberty regained her right to speak on the House floor. She had been censured for protesting the state’s policy that allows men to compete in women’s sports—in other words, the policies regarding transgender athletes. The Supreme Court ruled that this was inappropriate, in a 7–2 decision. A couple of Democrats crossed sides. They allowed her to regain her ability to represent her constituents on the floor.

Meanwhile, President Trump had a big day. It was a rare day in Washington—a president leaving the White House to go to the Capitol for something other than the State of the Union address. Why did he do it? Because he wanted to bring all House Republicans together around one big, beautiful bill.
