Another Tragedy the Liberal Media Chooses to Ignore

On May 16, EE.UU. was once again shaken by an act of irrational violence, when 34-year-old Daniel Ortega opened fire inside a gym located in the Northwest Valley of Las Vegas. Armed with an AR-15-style rifle, Ortega fired at least 24 rounds, pursuing a gym employee whom he fatally wounded. His weapon jammed shortly thereafter, preventing a far greater tragedy. Thanks to the swift intervention of local law enforcement, Ortega was shot before he could continue his rampage.

At this point in the story, the question must be asked: how did we get here again?

While the liberal media rushes to blame guns or once again point fingers at law-abiding Second Amendment supporters, someone must speak the truth: this attack was not a failure of the Constitution or American rights—it was, like many before, a clear sign of a broken justice and immigration system, a culture that glorifies violence, and a weakening of law and order driven for years by progressive policies.

Who Was Daniel Ortega? A Symptom, Not an Accident
According to the Clark County Sheriff’s Office, Ortega was a member of the gym and lived in the area. He worked as a bellhop at a property on the Las Vegas Strip, according to police sources. He had no serious criminal record, which makes it even more disturbing that someone with access to legal firearms chose to cold-bloodedly murder an innocent employee. The motive remains unclear, though investigators have ruled out gang retaliation or personal conflict, raising even more questions.

This attack doesn’t appear to be the result of a spontaneous emotional outburst. Ortega entered with an assault rifle, walked straight toward his target, and fired more than 20 times. Authorities have described his actions as “systematic” and “calculated.”

The most alarming part? According to the assistant sheriff, it was the weapon malfunctioning that ultimately saved lives. Ortega was on his way to becoming a mass murderer. Had his rifle not jammed, we’d be talking about multiple victims today.

Where Is the Left Now?
It’s telling how, in cases like this, Democrat-aligned media suddenly goes silent. No marches, no outraged opinion pieces, no celebrities speaking out. Why? Because this type of attack doesn’t fit their political narrative. Ortega wasn’t a white supremacist, wasn’t a Trump supporter, and didn’t act under a neatly exploitable ideology. That’s why they bury the story. The double standard is clear.

The same outlets that capitalized on previous tragedies to push for civilian disarmament now fall quiet in the face of a story where a legally owned firearm nearly became a tool of mass murder. The issue is not the rifle—it’s who holds it, and why.

Security and Order: Priorities Under the Trump Administration
Since President Donald J. Trump returned to office in January 2025, one of the core pillars of his administration has been restoring law and order. His commitment to increasing police funding, supporting local departments, and eliminating the “defund the police” narrative pushed by Democrat leadership has been welcomed by communities that truly bear the cost of crime.

This case proves the importance of well-trained, well-supported law enforcement. The police response was swift and effective: Ortega was fatally shot while attempting to flee through a side exit. No further lives were lost after the initial shooting—and that wasn’t luck. It was professionalism.

What This Tragedy Teaches Us: Responsibility and Action
While bureaucrats in Washington debate hollow reforms, America’s streets continue to face real threats every day. Ortega is just one more name in a long list of individuals who, due to untreated mental health issues, soft-on-crime policies, or pure homicidal impulse, target innocent people simply living their lives.

Yes, we need more mental health support. But we also need zero tolerance for crime, secure borders to prevent the trafficking of illegal weapons and drugs, and a culture that upholds discipline, order, and life—not victimhood.

The Las Vegas shooting wasn’t the fault of an amendment or a political party. It was the result of a weakened environment, one in which foundational institutions have been demoralized and a real threat has been ignored for too long. But the Trump administration isn’t hiding. And with each case like this, it becomes clearer: America doesn’t need political correctness. It needs strength.

Edgar Quinonez, the employee killed, was just 31 years old. His life was ended by a man who should never have been in a position to attack. May his memory remind us all that true honor lies not in progressive silence—but in defending truth, justice, and freedom.
