Austria's Controversial Locomotive - ÖBB Class 1014

Considered something of a European equivalent to the HHP-8 of the United States in terms of its truncated service career and controversial operation, the ÖBB Class 1014 was originally meant to be the new face of Austria's re-established rail connections to its neighbours, providing state-of-the-art dual-voltage capabilities with performance and speed that could allow for a competitive link on international trains.

Sadly, the ÖBB Class 1014, against an expected service life of 30 years, would be withdrawn after only half that time when reliability faults began to show, followed by the rail operator dismissing the class out of hand, leading to highly expensive and complex litigation rising into the millions of Euros, though today, the surviving units face the prospect of a new life working in Tanzania, showing that there may be a future for these forsaken machines.
