ALBANY, N.Y. (NEWS10) — New York State Police announced an upcoming change in the design of their patrol vehicle fleet. Starting in 2025, new troop cars will feature a gray body with gold striping, a transition from the current configuration of dark blue and yellow.
The new look pays homage to previous renditions of state patrol cars, particularly a gray motif utilized in the early 1950s. State Police said the change honors the history and tradition of the organization while maintaining a strong, professional design that is easily visible and recognizable to the public. Technical Sergeant Jack Keller, the Assistant Director of Public Information for New York State Police at Division Headquarters, said the idea came from the New York State Police superintendent.

“We wear a gray uniform and that gray, people may not be aware of this, that our uniform really is, even though it looks gray, black and white thread that’s woven together,” Keller said. “That’s to symbolize the neutrality of a New York State trooper.”
As of February, there’s only one vehicle in the fleet with the modernized aesthetic. New patrol cars will be painted with the updated pattern as they are purchased, and there are no plans to overhaul any cars with the current blue design.

The new color will save the department money. As the dark blue color was extremely expensive.

“We actually had to pay to own that color,” Keller said. “We paid simply almost $600 to $700 per vehicle for that specific dark blue because we had to make sure the blue was the same across all manufacturers.”
