Australia begins cleanup after floods kill 5

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese announced a cleanup in eastern Australia after record floods killed five people and stranded tens of thousands.

The floods hit New South Wales hardest, damaging an estimated 10,000 properties.

Conditions have eased, but over 50,000 people were isolated, and hundreds remain in evacuation centers.

A man’s body was found near Taree, bringing the death toll to five.

The storms caused widespread damage, including disrupted transport and debris-strewn coastal areas, Al-Jazeera has reported.

Australia has faced multiple extreme weather events since early 2021, which experts link to climate change.
