The story begins by introducing Lazarus. Lazarus in Hebrew is Elahzar = GOD will help. He was from Bethany = house of the poor or house of misrey. He resided in Bethany or Beit Aniah in Hebrew, which means something like the House (or place) of the poor.
The sisters say that Yeshua loved Lazarus with a phileo love, a personal love. Notice, Yeshua elevates that love to an Agape love, an impersonal love. Which love is a better love?
Judea was where the authorities were in force trying to kill Yeshua. So, we see the reluctance of the Disciples to go to Judea. As if to say: well, if Lazarus is just sick, then he will get better so we don’t have to go there.
13 However, Yeshua spoke (lego = it is used in a rare tense, pluperfect = far away…HIS disciples were far away from understanding the meaning of what Yeshua spoke) Yeshua spoke of his (Lazarus’s) death, but they thought that HE was speaking about taking rest in sleep.14 Then Yeshua said to them plainly, “Lazarus is dead.
The implication is that the many Jews who came to comfort Martha and Mary were from Jerusalem, which in turn suggests that the family was rather prominent. The assumption that the family was wealthy explains that Mary had expensive perfume or perfumed oil.
At one level Yeshua’s words Your brother will rise again could be taken as simply he will be resurrected at the rapture, he will be in Heaven, he does have eternal life. These things she has heard Yeshua teach and the Pharisees believed in the resurrection of the dead. This belief is one of the key differences between the Pharisees and the Sadducees, who did not believe in the resurrection. The Pharisees were far more numerous at the time and this was something Martha had understood.
