Facts about the Trump-Springsteen feud
May 14, 2025: Springsteen criticizes Trump in Manchester
Bruce Springsteen opens his "Land of Hope and Dreams" tour in Manchester, England, at the Co-op Live Arena.

In a speech before "Land of Hope and Dreams," he calls the Trump administration "corrupt, incompetent, and treacherous."

He says, "In my homeland, America, which I love, which has been a beacon of hope and freedom for 250 years, is currently in the hands of a corrupt, incompetent, and treacherous government." He calls on the audience to "stand up against authoritarianism and let freedom ring."

Other accusations include the government persecuting people for free speech, supporting dictators, harming workers, and abandoning poor children.

May 16, 2025: Trump Responds to Truth Social
Trump posts on Truth Social and calls Springsteen "highly overrated," "not talented," and a "pushy, obnoxious jerk."

He writes: "I see the highly overrated Bruce Springsteen going abroad to badmouth the President of the United States. Never liked him, never liked his music, nor his radical left-wing politics."

Trump calls Springsteen "dumb as a rock" and a "dried-out prune of a rocker" whose "skin is all atrophied."

He tells Springsteen to "shut up" until he returns to the US, adding: "Then we'll see how it goes for him!" ("Then we'll all see how it goes for him!") – interpreted by some as a threat.

May 17, 2025: Springsteen follows up
At his second concert in Manchester, Springsteen repeats his criticism.

He says: "In America, they persecute people for their free speech and dissent. The richest men are happy to leave the world's poorest children to sickness and death. They bully loyal American workers."

He emphasizes that "things are happening that are changing the nature of our democracy" and calls for resistance to authoritarianism.

May 19, 2025: Trump calls for investigation
Trump posts again on Truth Social, calling for a "major investigation" into Springsteen, Beyoncé, Oprah Winfrey, and Bono.

He claims, without evidence, that Springsteen's performances for Kamala Harris's 2024 campaign were "illegal campaign contributions."

Quote: "How much did Kamala Harris pay Bruce Springsteen for his poor performance during her campaign? Isn't that an illegal campaign contribution?"

FEC filings show that Springsteen's company (Thrill Hill Productions) received $75,000 from Harris' campaign on November 19, 2024, which is legal for performances.

May 20, 2025: Support for Springsteen
The American Federation of Musicians (AFM) defends Springsteen and Taylor Swift against Trump's attacks.

AFM President Tino Gagliardi: "We won't stay silent when our members Bruce Springsteen and Taylor Swift are attacked by the president. Musicians have the right to free speech."

Neil Young posts on his website: "Bruce and thousands of musicians think you're ruining America. Worry about that, not about dying children in Gaza."

May 21, 2025: Springsteen Releases EP
Springsteen releases a live EP, "Land of Hope and Dreams," recorded on May 14 in Manchester.

The EP includes his anti-Trump speech, including: "America is in the hands of a corrupt, incompetent, and traitorous government."

Trump responds with a doctored video on Truth Social and X showing him hitting a golf ball that hits Springsteen on stage and knocks him to the ground (a clip based on a real fall Springsteen took).

Background: Past Tensions
Springsteen has criticized Trump since 2015, including calling him a "conman" in 2016 and playing for Hillary Clinton.

In 2020, he said parts of America were "hypnotized" by a "con man from Queens."

He endorsed Kamala Harris in 2024 and called Trump "contemptuous of the Constitution and democracy."

Trump previously used Springsteen's "Born in the U.S.A." at rallies, which Springsteen disliked.

Context
Springsteen: Longtime Trump critic, supported Democratic candidates (Obama, Biden, Harris). His music often addresses the working class and social justice.

Trump: Often reacts aggressively to criticism from celebrities (e.g., Taylor Swift, Beyoncé), uses Truth Social for personal attacks.
