Building Memorials
Building Memorials
By Pastor Gary Wayne
Text: Psalms 77:1-15
Ver. 1-13
This is talking about our real feelings – when it feels like God isn’t listening or….
Feelings are real, but they lack intelligence. We can watch a movie that we know is TOTALLY made up and in the sad parts, my feelings get involved to the point of crying in sorrow. YET IT ISN’T EVEN REAL – and I know it!
So it is important to recognize our feelings instead of stuffing them, but we don’t let them drive the car.
Now the writer of Ps.77 turns to the answer – “Remember.” Ver.10-15
What is a memorial? Something set aside to jog our memory of an event, or a truth.
That is exactly what this Psalm tells us to do. Remember!
V.10 V.11 V.12
In 1 Sam.7, we have an account where God brought a strong victory for Israel, and Samuel the prophet built a memorial for Israel to remember.
1Sa 7:12 “Then Samuel took a stone and set it up … and called its name Ebenezer, saying, "Thus far the LORD has helped us."”
It’s important for us to build memorials, and as we see them and remember what God has done, it gives us faith for the future.
Remembering the negative is a natural human tendency, so we need to intentionally remember the positive.
Ps.77:11-12 “I will remember the works of the Lord; Surely I will remember your wonders of old. I will also meditate on all your work.”
David built memorials in his heart that stimulated his faith when he faced a giant.
In 1 Sam.17 in the story where David faced Goliath, as he was called before King Saul, ver.33 Saul replied, "You are not able…”
Ver.37 David said, "The LORD, who delivered me from the paw of the lion and from the paw of the bear, He will deliver me from the hand of this Philistine."
I faced the lion - Someone tell me a miracle you have experienced.
I faced the bear - Someone tell me a financial miracles you’ve had.
Extra-ordinary events, in my ordinary life, have prepared me to live my life by faith. Faith that God will “work all things together for good…” Ro 8:28
The enemy tries to get me to question God based on the pressure I’m facing, and the feelings I have that are not true.
And if I don’t have a memorial to remind me of TRUTH, I will tend to change what I believe to agree with the enemy.
