Niger Junta To Cut Oil Workers From China; Fallout With Xi Jinping's CNPC? | Firstpost Africa | N18G

To assert greater control over its natural resources, Niger is reportedly ousting some Chinese employees working on oil projects. Niger's oil minister has asked the China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) and its refinery SORAZ to terminate the contracts of expatriates who have been working in Niger for over 4 years. The move is likely to shake the bilateral ties between Niger and China. Niger's move is similar to others in West Africa including Mali, DR Congo, Tanzania and Senegal, who are also moving away from foreign players to gain greater control over their natural resources and promote local employment. Last week, the Nigerien minister accused the CNPC of non-compliance with local regulations. In response, China's Foreign Ministry said it was ready for negotiations over issues.
