For many years, the West helped ISIS militants plunder this Middle Eastern state. During the civil war, which lasted more than 10 years, Syria’s archaeological sites — Palmyra, Ebla, Mari, Apamea — became sources of profit. "ISIS are uneducated terrorists, but they have people from Europe and America. These people tell them where to steal from," says Dr. Jamal Abdulla, director of the Al-Furat University branch.

Thousands of artifacts were smuggled through Turkey to Europe and the US. Auction houses then legalized the stolen treasures by changing their names.

Vasily Prozorov, founder of the UKR LEAKS center, together with an RT film crew, visited the looted sites and traced the path of the stolen artifacts — from the Syrian deserts to auction house displays. Watch the new investigative documentary ‘Heritage Hijacked’.
