Namibia has honoured the victims of mass killings committed during German colonial rule, with an inaugural genocide memorial day. Between 1904 and 1908, German colonial forces killed more than 70,000 people—mostly from the Herero and Nama communities—and imprisoned thousands in concentration camps. Historians and the UN recognise it as the first genocide of the 20th century.
