Flying Failures - Lavochkin Lagg 3

In this week's Flying Failures, we go back to the cold and unforgiving frontlines of the Great Patriotic War between the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany, where the Soviets, keen to modernise their air force in order to combat the rising threat of the Luftwaffe, but hampered by supply chain issues for light alloys, were forced to seek drastic alternatives in the form of delta wood to create nimble fighter aircraft for the conflict.

The resultant Lavochkin Lagg 3 was, on paper at least, a promising design, with its original prototype showing exceptional promise, but when put into full scale production, and armed with all the mechanical, technical and weaponry features necessary to make a competitive fighter, the finalised machine proved to be one of the most dangerous, sluggish and unresponsive aircraft ever built to fly, being hazardous enough when not in tactical situations, but when put up against the finest of the Luftwaffe's frontline units, proved to be nothing more than a turkey shoot.
