The oil or perfume that Mary uses for the feet of Yeshua, symbolically, an anointing was expensive. The price was approx. a years worth of wages for a common laborer… maybe a little less. But the point of this event with the oil and the anointing by a woman was a very symbolic act on her part. John identifies her as Mary the sister of Lazarus.
6 He (Judas) did not say this because he (Judas) cared about the poor but because he was a thief; as keeper of the money bag, he used to help himself to what was put into it.7 “Leave her alone,” Yeshua replied. “It was intended that she should save this perfume for the day of MY burial.8 You will always have the poor among you, but you will not always have ME.”
12:1 Six days before the Passover, Yeshua came to Bethany, where Lazarus lived, whom Yeshua had raised from the dead.
Almost half of John’s Gospel is dedicated to this last week. Matthew uses about 1/3 of his Gospel to cover that week, Mark a little over 1/3 and Luke about 1/4.
Nard (nard os) is a plant that is crushed to produce extravagant, very aromatic oil. And it seems that this was a perfume that was used in burial as well. It was a strong fragrance…you can get it on amazon, I don’t know what it smells like. But there isn’t any special meaning of the plant that I can find. So the point being made is that it was expensive and Mary was symbolically doing an anointing.
Mary’s symbolic act was thought-provoking even to the naturally minded thinker, especially given the fact that Bethany was literally home to many poor disadvantaged people. The people were taken care of by the donations of those in the city, town, village. So this gives more reason for Judas to object, even though he wasn’t interested in helping the poor.
1COR 11:15, if a woman has long hair, it is her glory? For long hair is given to her as a covering.
