Oxon Hill, MD - According to the Maryland Office of the Attorney General’s Independent Investigations Division (IID), the decedent has been identified as 44-year-old Aevon Bucknor, Jr., of Oxon Hill. Bucknor was shot and killed by Prince George’s County Police on April 20 following a violent series of events that began hours earlier.

The officers involved in the deadly shooting have been identified as Corporal Phillip Johnson, an 18-year veteran of the Prince George’s County Police Department, and Acting Lieutenant James Martinez, a 13-year veteran. Both are currently assigned to the Bureau of Patrol.

Police say the chaos began just after 8 a.m. on Sunday when officers responded to a stabbing in the 8300 block of Indian Head Highway. A man and a woman were found suffering from critical stab wounds. Investigators believe Bucknor, who reportedly knew the victims, attacked them during a domestic dispute and then set fire to the apartment before running away.

Around 10 a.m., officers received several 911 calls reporting an armed man at the intersection of American Way and Saint George Boulevard in National Harbor.

When police confronted Bucknor, he was still holding a knife and refused repeated commands to stop. Corporal Johnson and Lieutenant Martinez fired their weapons, striking Bucknor. He was taken to a hospital, where he later died. No officers were injured during the encounter.

“This particular suspect, this individual, with nothing related here today, we have handled that individual in the past,” said Prince George’s County Police Chief Malik Aziz during a Sunday press conference, noting Bucknor had prior encounters with law enforcement across jurisdictional lines.

The two stabbing victims remain hospitalized in critical but stable condition.

Eugene Wood, a neighbor who lives near the burned apartment, described the chaotic scene.

“I looked up at the building, and I was like, oh my god. That’s her building,” Wood told WUSA9, referring to the woman who was stabbed.

He says his daughter is close friends with the child of the woman and Bucknor, who were reportedly married but separated.

“He [Bucknor] came to the door, knocked, and when she opened it, he busted in. He saw she was there with another man and stabbed them both—then chased them out of the house,” Wood said.
