In Episode 4, "The Sauna Test," the threads converge as Max and Eleven trap Billy in a sauna to test if the Mind Flayer possesses him, confirming his infection when he exhibits superhuman strength and rage. Dustin’s group discovers a secret Russian lab beneath the mall, where they’re trapped in an elevator with glowing green vials, revealing the Soviets’ attempt to reopen the Upside Down portal. Nancy and Jonathan connect Mrs. Driscoll’s erratic behavior to Billy’s, realizing the Mind Flayer is building a hive mind army. Joyce and Hopper infiltrate a Russian base but are ambushed, escalating the stakes as the Mind Flayer’s influence grows.
