An estimated 250 million bees escaped from a truck carrying active hives that overturned in Washington state near the Canadian border.

Emergency officials and over two dozen beekeepers worked to recover the bees, which were housed in box hives weighing about 70,000 lbs.

Authorities closed the area until the rescue was complete, warning the public to stay away due to swarming bees.

Most of the bees were expected to return to their hives within 24-48 hours, the BBC has reported.

The bees were being transported for both honey production and crop pollination.
