Cosmonaut Weapons
Cosmonaut Weapons Description
Cosmonaut weapons, specifically designed for Soviet and Russian space travelers, were primarily intended for survival in remote areas, such as the Siberian wilderness, in case of an emergency landing. The most notable example is the TP-82 Survival Pistol, a unique firearm issued to cosmonauts from the 1980s until 2007. The TP-82 was a triple-barreled combination gun designed to protect against wildlife and assist in survival scenarios:
• Design: The TP-82 featured two smoothbore barrels (12.5×70mm shotgun rounds) for firing shotgun shells and one rifled barrel (5.45×39mm) for rifle rounds. Its detachable stock doubled as a machete for cutting wood or clearing vegetation.
• Purpose: Developed for cosmonauts landing in hostile environments, it was meant to defend against predators like bears or wolves, hunt for food, and signal for help (using flare rounds). The weapon was compact for stowage in spacecraft.
• Usage: Issued during the Soyuz program, it was carried on missions to ensure cosmonauts could survive in remote regions until rescue. It was phased out in 2007, replaced by standard semi-automatic pistols like the Makarov for cost and practicality reasons.
• TOZ-81: Another experimental weapon, the TOZ-81 was a bullpup revolver shotgun pistol with an integrated folding knife and detachable stock. Only a few were produced for trials, making it a rare and unique design.
These weapons reflect the Soviet space program’s focus on preparing cosmonauts for extreme survival scenarios, combining versatility and ruggedness.
