Excuse Me Mr. Driver (I Didn’t See You Had Your Headlights On)

This song is sort of comical reminder of why it might not be such a great idea to blatantly cut someone off... even if you do happen to be in a hurry to get somewhere.

I used to commute 30 miles to work everyday, and for some reason (which I blamed on heavy traffic) I was always in a hurry and running late to work. A lot of things happened during this time and I saw my fare share of incidents like this involving other drivers.

I finally decided to memorialize these incidents in a song. This song is based on a combination of things I saw and things that were partly embellished.

I was driving on the freeway,
Just trying to get to work;

I didn’t mean to be a jerk.
But sometimes things can happen
That come as a surprise,
And when you’re driving in a hurry
There are some things you shouldn’t try.

I was trying to get around you,
Cause you make my commute too long!
I see signal lights a-flashing
When I look in my rearview;
So Mr. Driver don’t get angry,

Between a rock and a hard place,
Next to slow car and speeding truck;
I was running late to work again,
So I thought I’d try my luck.
And it was like the heavens opened,
I saw a gap between the truck and car…
I sped up and raced around them,
And I thanked my lucky stars!

A horn started blaring,
He was following real close;
Things looked blurry like a movie,
And my knuckles grew white like ghosts.
I was hoping I could lose him,
And nearly passed my exit sign;
The car faded in the distance
And red and blue lights followed right behind.

I lost my good driver discount,
How could I be such a fool?
Can’t afford to pay the ticket
Or to go to traffic school.
So next time I’m on the freeway
And I see another cop,
When I want to pass somebody
I think it’s time to exit off.
