When I talk to people and they ask what I do and I tell them I run a podcast I get three very common questions....

How do you make money doing that?
What is your podcast about?
What is it called?

When I answer that third question with "The Survival Podcast", it almost always starts a conversation that begins with some quite inaccurate assumptions by the person I am talking to. Whether they are of a prepper mind set or not it tends to be the same angle. "End of the world" type stuff. I instantly shift into explaining what "modern survivalism is". That yes we do things like store food, medical supplies and equipment to deal with black out, but that it just the start of what we really do. Yes, yes, most of us have guns too, but that's also a small part of it.

I then talk about some of the other stuff we do, building businesses, elimination of toxic debt, learning hard and soft skills, gardening, learning to be a great cook, Bitcoin as an investment and more. With the non prepper type people they tend to be interested in at least some of the stuff beyond "beans, bullets & bandaids". Sooner or later it comes back to prepping though and honestly most people are open to it, see a need for it but they don't "get it".

This is where I shift gears and tell them what we really do is comprehensive lifestyle design, prepping is only a piece of that. But it may also be one of the most important components of life stye design. They will often ask why, expecting prepping is only for say nuclear war or economic collapse. I then simply ask them, "do you have insurance on like your car, your house and your health"? They say of course. I then ask why. As they respond about two sentences in you see the light come on.

But what is basic preparedness? Just being a "Boy Scout"? Ready to be off grid for a year or more? Of course the answer is that being prepared looks a bit different for every person, in every location, at every different stage of life. A guy with a 150,000 dollar house doesn't insure it for 500,000 dollars unless he's an idiot. Insurance is based on what you are insuring and the risks to it. Today we look at prepping though that lens, what are the common components everyone should consider, why do they matter and how do you put them together. Especially for people who are "still on zero".
