Stanley begins by clarifying who gave the law at Sinai: it was God Himself, identified as Jesus Christ, the God of Israel. He supports this by referencing key scripture passages, particularly from Hebrews 9, Jeremiah 31, and Psalm 68, emphasizing that the same divine figure who instituted the Old Covenant also promised and inaugurated the New Covenant. This divine figure is described metaphorically as a husband to Israel, which is crucial to grasping the dynamic between the law, covenant, and Christ’s sacrifice.

Stanley then explores the relationship between believers and the law using the analogy of marriage from Romans 7. Paul explains that a wife is bound to her husband by law as long as he lives, but upon his death, she is free to remarry without being considered an adulteress. Similarly, Christ, who is portrayed as the husband of the believers, fulfilled the law through His death, thereby freeing them from the dominion of the Old Covenant law. This shift does not lead to lawlessness but instead calls believers to walk in love, which Paul in Romans 13 calls the fulfillment of the law.

Throughout, Stanley stresses that understanding the law’s giver, the significance of Christ’s death, and the transition from the Old Covenant to the New is essential for a correct grasp of Christian life and law. Christ’s death was necessary to enable believers to be joined to a new covenant relationship where love, not law adherence, becomes the guiding principle.
