* Stubby: Georgetown's Wartime Hero Mascot

Georgetown is not a university typically associated with football, but in the early 1920s, the Hoyas had a mascot with an extraordinary story: a hero from World War I. This mascot, a pit bull and terrier mix named Stubby, became a symbol of courage and resilience.

Stubby was smuggled to France during the war by Private Robert Conroy. Exposed to German gas on the front lines, Stubby developed a sensitivity to its smell. One morning, he detected gas and alerted American troops just before a mustard gas attack, likely saving an entire division. Stubby’s heroism didn’t stop there; he was also injured in a grenade attack, earning him the nickname "Stubby" for his shortened tail.

After the war, Stubby returned to the U.S. and became Georgetown’s mascot from 1921 to 1923. His inspiring presence at games and campus events embodied perseverance and loyalty, making Stubby’s journey from the battlefields to Georgetown unforgettable in college athletics history.
