July 13, 1965 - At today’s news conference, President Johnson warned that this nation faces “new and serious decisions” in the near future to meet increased aggression in Vietnam. “It will be necessary to resist that aggression and therefore to have substantially larger increments of troops which we have been supplying from time to time,” Johnson said.
The President said a decision on how many more troops will be needed will be made after Defense Secretary Robert McNamara and Ambassador Henry Cabot Lodge return from a survey of the situation. The two are to leave Washington tomorrow night for a week of talks in Saigon.
