Alice Weidel is a German right wing politician, co-chairwoman of the Alternative for Germany (AfD) party since June 2022, and leader of its parliamentary group in the Bundestag since 2017. She joined the AfD in 2013, initially drawn by its euroskeptic stance, and became a prominent figure as the party’s lead candidate in the 2017 and 2021 federal elections. In 2024, she was selected as the AfD’s candidate for chancellor in the 2025 federal election. An economist with a doctorate, Weidel worked at Goldman Sachs and the Bank of China before entering politics. She is openly gay and lives with her Sri Lankan-born partner and their two adopted sons in Switzerland, and advocates for anti-immigration policies, tax cuts, and EU reform.
