"Marriage is not an ideal."

In his June 1st homily, Pope Leo said, “Marriage is not an ideal, but the canon of true love between a man and a woman: total, faithful, fruitful love.”

Many don't know that this was a topic of debate in 2014 Synod discussions among the bishops.

According to Cdl. Raymond Burke, one prominent cardinal claimed marriage was a lofty "ideal" held up by the Church, but many cannot reach that "ideal," and therefore pastoral practice needed to find ways to integrate such "non-ideal" unions into the Church.

In 2016, Pope Francis' controversial apostolic exhortation Amoris Laetitia was issued, adopting the concept that marriage is an ideal, using the word 22 times throughout the document, while promoting a more "open" pastoral practice that tried to integrate non-ideal unions, e.g., divorced and remarried couples, back into the life of the Church.

But Pope Leo said in his June 1st homily, “Marriage is not an ideal, but the canon of true love between a man and a woman: total, faithful, fruitful love.”
