Japan: Multiple Tremors Hit Hokkaido, Trigger Fear of "Megaquake" | Spotlight

In Japan, people are in fear of a potential megaquake that could batter the country. The panic among citizens follows a series of tremors that rocked the coast of Japan’s northern island of Hokkaido on Monday and Saturday. Some of these tremors caused a major seismic activity. Japanese citizens fear that these tremors could lead to a "megaquake" like the one in 2011, which killed over 18,000 people. The Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA) is treating these tremors as isolated incidents as none of these quakes were strong enough to trigger additional seismic activity. However, it also warned that the Chishima Trench, near the Hokkaido island, has been the source of megaquakes in the past.
